Cinco de Mayo History and Recipes
Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, marks the anniversary of Mexico’s unanticipated victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Celebrated only as a regional holiday in Mexico, mostly in the state of Puebla and a few other areas, Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated in the United States and other parts of the world as people honor their Mexican heritage with pride.
The date is marked by music, festivals, and Mexican food in the United States, taking on an important role as a day to honor the culture of Americans of Mexican ancestry. Over the years, more people who are not of Mexican descent have also celebrated as they do St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, and other cultural celebrations. The day finds mariachi demonstrations and music as well as a focus on all things Mexican as people enjoy beverages, food, and wearing clothes and colors representative of that country.
