St. Patrick Day Recipes

St. Patrick’s Day may have started out as a religious holiday, but it’s now a celebration of all things Irish around the world. As such, a number of traditional Irish St. Patrick Day recipes have become common at this time of the year, and many people of Irish descent take great pride in being able to share their heritage with friends and family through a good meal!

Here’s a guide to some of the most popular St. Patrick Day recipes eaten around the world.

Irish Breakfast

Why not start the day with a filling Irish breakfast? This consists of a number of ingredients, namely fried sausages, bacon, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and Irish bread. If you really want to be authentic you may also want to include a black pudding, made from pig’s blood and fat (it tastes a lot better than it sounds).

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Corned beef and cabbage is one of the most popular St. Patrick Day recipes made in the US. It’s an easy meal to make and can be adapted in a huge number of ways. Put it in the crock pot and leave it to stew all day, and you’ll have a wonderful, hearty meal waiting for you when you arrive home from work. Just make sure to buy your corned beef and cabbage in advance – the ingredients are very popular at this time of the year!

Irish Soda Bread

Many people choose to celebrate the day by baking their own homemade Irish soda bread. This bread gets its name from the fact that it’s made using baking soda rather than yeast. There are a huge number of recipes available online, but the good news is that they are all usually quick and easy to make! Or you could cheat and buy it from the store to save time!

What to Drink

Guinness is often the drink of choice on St. Patrick’s Day, but you can also try theming your drinks with the color green. Why not make your own green soda, green smoothie or green shake as the non-alcoholic option for the evening? Or stick to the green Irish beers served in your local bars.

For an after dinner treat, you might also want to try an Irish coffee. You’ll need good quality coffee, brown sugar, a measure of Irish whiskey and some fresh cream. It might take a little practice to get the cream layered on top of the coffee!

Whatever St. Patrick Day recipes you choose to make, remember that it’s less about fitting in with a “theme” than it is about having some good fun with your friends!
